A Letter To The Labels That Wore Me
Dear Reader,
Thank you for choosing this story.
Before you meet these characters, I'd like to ask one thing of you:
Come with an open heart.
Because this story isn't only about mental health.
It's about labels.
The ones we're given.
The ones we inherit.
The ones whispered behind our backs.
The ones written in files, spoken in courtrooms, repeated in classrooms, carried into workplaces, and quietly accepted as truth.
Some labels describe what happened to us.
Others attempt to define who we are.
Sometimes they're written in a medical chart.
Sometimes they're attached to a mistake.
Sometimes they're passed from one generation to the next.
And sometimes they're spoken so often that we begin to believe them ourselves.
Not in Session was born from a question I couldn't stop asking:
What happens when a label becomes louder than a person's name?
When "bipolar" replaces daughter.
When "addict" replaces father.
When "violent" replaces child.
When "broken" replaces survivor.
When "crazy" becomes easier to say than misunderstood.
This collection isn't about proving who was right or wrong.
It isn't about explaining every diagnosis or solving every struggle.
It's about the people who continue living beneath the words others use to describe them.
The quiet battles no one applauds.
The conversations that happen after everyone else has gone home.
The courage it takes to keep becoming yourself when the world has already decided who you are.
If, somewhere in these pages, you recognize a piece of yourself—or someone you've loved—I hope you'll pause before judging.
I hope you'll look beyond the label.
Because every person you meet in this story had a life before someone gave them a name they never chose.
….
Every label tells a story.
But not every story belongs to the label.
Before every diagnosis...
Before every assumption...
Before every whispered opinion...
There was a person learning how to survive.
May these pages remind us that understanding begins not when we find the right words to describe someone—
but when we're willing to see beyond them.
And sometimes...
the person hidden beneath the label is the one we've been waiting to meet all along.
Read slowly.
Listen carefully.
The most important truths in this story are often found in what isn't said.
Welcome to Not in Session.
I'm grateful you're here.
